Evaluating PHP template engines

For a project I'm working on, I've hit a brickwall with pT and the fact it takes an awful long time to initialise.

Has there been any attempts to merge TBS with an open source CMS like Mambo or Joomla, and how would you do it?

MODx (http://modxcms.com) is a CMS integrating TBS for some purpose.

I've looked over the source of MODx and can't find any reference to TBS.

There is a plug-in named TBS4Modx.
